Spring Semester 2006

 Section A

Lecturer: Peter Yaple

Course Description

This course will offer Business majors a broad introduction to English in the context of business. It is essentially a functional course that builds business-related vocabulary with a strong emphasis on basic grammar, reading, and writing.

General Aims

This course aims at increasing the students’ ability to:

1.      understand the language of business

2.      develop the language skills of reading

3.      revise and practice basic grammatical structures and patterns of English within a business context

4.      develop communication skills necessary for careers in business.

Policy

Use of email and Internet for coursework, materials, and communication is mandatory. As problem solving is a key skill taught in this course, obtaining the proper connection with the ability to print-out materials will be your first challenge--there will be no exceptions so please do not ask.  Per University policy class attendance is also mandatory. If your unexcused absences exceed 25% of the total number of lectures of the course in this semester, you may be automatically withdrawn from the course and be given a grade of (WF) which will count towards your GPA.

This means that you must download, printout, and read the pre-assigned readings (as noted the "Assignments")  before class. This will help you to be prepared to discuss and debate in class the subject matter scheduled for that day. It will also aid you in the case of pop quizzes and in preparation for scheduled quizzes, tests and the final exam. Students who are habitually unprepared may not be counted as attending or even required to drop the course.

NOTE:  TURN OFF all cell phones during class. Technology is a tool, not a toy.
